We went to Gundersen Clinic today for some follow up appointments. Part of this was an ultrasound on his head to monitor for Hydrocephalus.
It has been determined that Devin does need a shunt. This is a pretty routine surgery for children with Spina Bifida. 80% of children with Spina Bifida require a shunt, so we knew that the likely hood was great. Devin's head circumference was 35 at birth and they measured it at 37.75 today. We have also been measuring it at home so we could see the progression. When we left the hospital they indicated that 1 1/4 cm in 1 week is cause for concern.
The head circumference has been the only sign he has shown thus far. He has been very alert, nursing, peeing and pooping well since we came home from the hospital. If left untreated many other complications can happen and it will affect the above mentioned activities. I am attaching some pictures taken over the week-end.
The brace for his 2 dislocated hips was supposed to go on tomorrow, but that will be pushed back until after surgery on Friday. Although we do not have an exact time of surgery, it sounds like it will probable be a 7:30 surgery (similar to the previous surgery time frames). The surgery is expected to last 2-3 hours. It can take a little longer in order to prevent any complications.
We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers as Devin goes through this procedure.
