When Devin was born the delivery room had a different weight than the NICU. I suspect this had to do with the bag they had put on him. The following day, during surgery, they opened the fluid sac and snipped areas to release the spinal cord from the surrounding tissue but did not actually try to repair anything. They then tucked the spinal cord in where is was supposed to be and cut and stitched the skin to create more of a flat area on the back.

FYI-
Devin had surgery to repair the lesion on his back and everything went great!
At 2:00 today, he got taken off of the ventilator, and is started to wake up. He is back to the same monitoring systems as last night before surgery!! He is doing well!! yeah!!:-)

Subject: Devin is here!!
Hi everyone!! Devin Andrew Filzen, son of Derek and Pam Filzen was born this morning. He was 7 pounds 5 ounces and doing well. Immediately after birth (c-section) they put a plastic bag over his lower body to protect the open lesion in the back (spina bifida). The medical staff at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI cleaned him up and bandaged the lesion until his surgery tomorrow morning at 7:30 am to close the lesion and repair as much spinal cord damage as possible. He is in the ICU unit at this hospital today and tomorrow after surgery
